Christina DeRondeChristina’s 2011 season proved to be another busy year.  With several events spread out through the year, Christina, once again, bookended her slate with long course events:  Ironman Texas and Ironman Arizona.  In between were some new and familiar shorter course events that saw her finish in the top 10 in her age group.

Perhaps some of the more memorable Ironman events of 2011 were Ironman CDA and Ironman Arizona.  At CDA, Christina spent the week with fellow Fortius Racing Team athletes Kelly Walsh, David Wachtel, Richard Nguyen, Eddie Salazar and Ryan Schneider in Idaho preparing, cheering and training through their big day at Ironman. “ Watching your mates, with whom you have trained with for over a year, participate in and finish with great strength and happiness one of the toughest events on the planet is a special day. “

In Arizona, a massive Fortius Racing contingent volunteered, supported and cheered Christina and her fellow athletes through this race.  “At Bike Special Needs, seeing your team ready for you with love and food is such a great feeling.  And, at the finisher’s chute, seeing that incredibly awesome screaming section of fellow gifted athletes dressed in Fortius Blue in the bleachers was the best finish EVER!”

But, the most meaningful highlights for Christina in 2011 were when her daughter Alex completed her first IronKids event in Boulder, CO in early August and her husband Bill and daughters Alex and Cory all participated in the parent/child Sprint triathlon at Santa Barbara Triathlon in late August.

“Having the family who has supported me through many years of competition, countless hours of training and tons of traveling to and from events-with and without me-participate and finish happy in their first triathlon efforts brings great joy to me.”  “Hopefully, an entire new generation of triathletes will emerge in my young family and my girls will continue to embrace multisport and the benefits of community and training that continues to draw me to triathlon.”

Christina’s upcoming year promises a schedule complete with running and biking events, short and long course triathlons and a continued commitment to education and growth in all three disciplines.  “2012 will be exciting, energizing and fun!”

A special thanks goes out to the most amazing Coaches Gerardo and Ray Barrios, the Genius Ariel Aboody, the indomitable Lisa Gillmann, the incomparable Jason James Canete (if that’s his real name) and all my outstanding mates who make me laugh during training and keep me focused and challenged on my journey to achieve my goals.  Couldn’t do it so well without you.  Xox and love you all.
